Taekwondo first appeared in Vietnam in the early of 1960s; therefore, Vietnam was one of a few countries taking up the martial art originating in Korea.

Taekwondo xuất hiện sớm ở Việt Nam vào đầu những năm 1960. Vì vậy, Việt Nam là một trong số ít những quốc gia đã có phong trào tập luyện môn võ thuật truyền thống này của Hàn Quốc.

 

Since 1989, Vietnam sports together with the whole nation have proceeded the opening and renovate policy. This led to the foundation of Hochiminh City Taekwondo Association in 1989, which was immediately put in operation. In short time, the number of Taekwondo practicing people increased, so did that of promising players; consequently, the Hochiminh City Taekwondo Championship was held in 1989 and has been annually proceeded since then.

 

Năm 1989, Hội Taekwondo thành phố Hồ Chí Minh được thành lập. Trong một thời gian ngắn, số lượng người tập luyện Taekwondo đã tăng rất nhanh. Cũng trong năm này, lần đầu tiên giải Taekwondo toàn thành được tổ chức và sau đó trở thành giải vô địch thành phố hàng năm.

 

The national Taekwondo championships, as a result, has been regularly organized since 1991. During this time, as there was not national Taekwondo association, Hochiminh City Taekwondo Association performed as a pioneer organization representing Vietnam Taekwondo in building co-operate relationship with Taekwondo organizations in the region and in the world, especially the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF). It is this relation that helps Vietnam receive the enthusiastic assistance from the World Taekwondo Federation, the Asian Taekwondo Union (ATU) and the Asean Taekwondo Federation (ATF) (Southeast Asian Taekwondo Union - SEATU), rapidly updating the movement in all aspects just since the early 1990s. Vietnam Taekwondo Association was officially formed on the 22^nd of December 1996 under the Decision No. 358/TTg of the Vietnam Government’s Prime Minister with 17 members of its executive board for the first office term (1996 - 2000).

 

Kể từ năm 1991 giải vô địch Taekwondo quốc gia được tổ chức đều đặn hàng năm. Liên đoàn Taekwondo Việt nam được chính thức thành lập vào ngày 22 tháng 12 năm 1996.

In spite of being rebuilt in 1989, Vietnam Taekwondo was able to set up national team for the 16^th SEA Games in the Philippines in 1991. This was the first time Vietnam Taekwondo appearing on an official international arena. With only 6 competitors (3 female) then, Vietnam Taekwondo won 3 medals: 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze.

 

Năm 1991, Việt Nam thành lập đội tuyển quốc gia tham dự SEA Games 16 tại Philippines. Đây là lần đầu tiên Taekwondo Việt nam xuất hiện chính thức trên đấu trường quốc tế kể từ sau ngày Miền Nam hoàn toàn giải phóng thống nhất đất nước. Với 16 VĐV (3 nữ), Taekwondo Việt nam đoạt 3 huy chương: 1 vàng, 1 bạc và 1 đồng.

 

The same achievement was done in the seconds participation in the 17^th SEA Games in Singapore. In the 18^th SEA Games in Chiang Mai, Thailand in 1995, Vietnam Taekwondo brought home 3 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals. In the 19th SEA Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, with 16 competitions Vietnam won 3 gold, 2 silver and 8 bronze medals. In the 20th SEA Games in Brunei in 1999, Vietnam won 3 gold, 5 silver and 5 bronze medals. In SEA Games in Malaysia 2001, with 16 competitors Vietnam Taekwondo team won 4 gold, 1 silver and 6 bronze medals.

 

Lần tham dự thứ 2, tại SEA Games 17 - Singapore, Việt Nam cũng giữ vững thành tích 3 huy chương. Tại SEA Games 18 - Chiang Mai, Thái Lan 1995 Việt Nam đoạt 3 huy chương vàng, 2 bạc và 2 đồng. SEA Games 19 Jakarta, Indonesia với 16 VĐV tham dự, Việt Nam đoạt 3 huy chương vàng, 2 bạc và 8 đồng. SEA Games 20 tại Brunei 1999, đội tuyển Taekwondo Việt Nam đoạt 3 huy chương vàng, 5 bạc và 5 đồng. SEA Games 2001 - Malaysia với 16 VĐV tham dự đoạt 4 huy chương vàng, 1 bạc và 6 đồng.

 

The best achievement ever marked so far done by Tran Quang Ha with Champion title at Bantam category in the 12^th Asiad in Hiroshima, Japan. Ha is also the first SEA Games Champion of Vietnam Taekwondo; Mr. Ho Nhat Thong - gold medal at Asia 13; Ms. Nguyen Thi Huyen Dieu - 4 times gold medal at SEA Games 20, 21, 22, 23. Vietnam even won medals in the Asian and World Taekwondo Championships.

 

Thành tích xuất sắc có Trần Quang Hạ đã đoạt huy chương vàng đầu tiên hạng cân 58kg tại Á vận hội 12 Hiroshima, Nhật. Hồ Nhất Thống đoạt huy chương vàng tại Asiad 13. Nguyễn Thị Huyền Diệu “Cô gái vàng” vô địch  4 lần SEA Games liên tiếp.

 

Especially, winning Silver Medal in the Sydney Olympic Games, Tran Hieu Ngan has made a landmark in the sports history of Vietnam. This is Vietnam’s ever-first medal in the Olympic Games, and extremely precious medal of Vietnam sports sector. As said by Vietnam Sports delegation head, Doan Thao, Hieu Ngan’s victory was a glorious imprint, splendid milestone of Vietnam sports sector. Sports commentator Barnaby Chesterman noted: “Hieu Ngan is the representative of Vietnam Sports who has made a landmark in the Olympic Games arena”. The Olympic Games web page: “ Hieu Ngan has played dauntlessly in the final match, this is Vietnam’s strong will and morale”.

 

Đặc biệt, thành tích nổi bậc nhất là Trần Hiếu Ngân đoạt huy chương bạc Olympic lần đầu tiên và duy nhất cho thể thao Việt Nam.

 

Together with the maturity of competitor force, the organizing ability of Vietnam Taekwondo has developed well with the following International Taekwondo Competition, increasingly attracting large number of top competitors from the World Taekwondo families.

There would be no development in Vietnam Taekwondo movement if Vietnam did not undertake the course of opening and renovating during the past few years implementing the policy for peace, friendship and cooperation in order to get ahead with friends from the four corners of the earth.
